How to Apply for a Council Property

If you want to become a tenant of the Council, or of a housing association in the Borough, you must register on our Housing Register.

But Council and housing association homes are very limited. Only a few hundred homes become available each year, and there are about 2,000 households on our Housing Register.

If you are homeless, or likely to become homeless soon, please telephone us for advice on 01277 312570 or 312564.

Once your application is registered, we will tell you how many priority points you have for housing. We award these according to your housing need.

You can then express interest for any properties that become available through HomeOption, our choice-based lettings scheme.

Changes to our Allocations Policy

Brentwood Borough Council would like to advise that there has been a recent amendment to the current allocations policy in regard which means Housing and Transfer Applicants may now express an interest for properties that are one bedroom beneath their assessed need.

For example:

• Those with a 3 bed need may now express an interest in a 2 or 3 bed property.
• Those with a 2 bed need may now express an interest in a 1 or 2 bed property.
• Those with a 1 bed need may now express an interest in a bedsit or 1 bed property.

This is subject to you not having more than the maximum number of persons in your household for the advertised property. The maximum number is shown on each advert.
