Equality Impact Assessments
What is an Equality Impact Assessment (EIA)?
The assessment is a tool to test the impact that new and existing policies and services already have, or will have, on people in our community. The assessment helps officers at Brentwood Council to find out if there is any adverse impact or illegal discrimination or any unmet need or requirements. “Adverse impact” means that the service or policy is disadvantageous to one or more groups of people.
The key purpose is to help the Council identify direct and indirect discrimination, institutional discrimination and any gaps in service provision. The Assessments inform our decision making processes to ensure that our priorities reflect the needs of everyone living in our communities. An action plan is drawn up to conclude the Equality Impact Assessment, this action plan feeds into our service and unit plans to ensure that the issues raised in the EIA are addressed.
Equality Impact Assessment Framework
Equality Impact Assessments must be undertaken and/or reviewed every 3 years. The framework will set out the 3 year Equality Impact Assessment Schedule. This will feed into an actions framework to ensure that the findings and solutions resulting from EIAs are actioned.
